Japan Studies in Nagasaki (JASIN) is a program specially designed to give the opportunity for students from other countries to study and live in Japan and Nagasaki. Classes are offered in Japanese as a second language, which every student is required to take. There are additonal classes for the foreign students on topics concerning Japan and Asia taught in English or simplified Japanese as well as some hands-on seminars in traditional Japanese arts.
The JASIN Program is NOT an intensive language program but rather the curriculum is designed to give students a wide academic expereince in a variety of aspects of Japanese society and culture. The Program also realizes that when studying abroad students' experiences outside of class can be invaluabe learning experiences. Therefore, the Program encourages a high degree of interaction between the foreign students and the Japanese students of the university and the community as a whole.
Most of the participants are current university students who are studying abroad. Students can enter in either the Spring for the Fall Term and can study for one or two terms. The students are mostly from the U.S., France, Britain, Canada, and Germany--in order of the number of participants.
There is another study abroad program called Nagasaki International Communications Studies, or NICS, which caters to students who primarily want to study the Japanese language. NICS students are mostly from China, Korea and Taiwan.
Enrollment each term runs between 30 and 40 in the JASIN Program and 60 and 100 students in the NICS Programs. There are an additional 150 foreign students at the university who are regular degree-seeking students.
The Program is located on the campus of Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies. All classes are conducted in the university facilities. Housing is arranged by the Program. Most students stay in home stays while some choose a dormitory or boarding house stay.
