自己紹介

私はイギリス人で、2010年から日本に住んでいます(しばらく東京で暮らし、そのあと長崎に来ました)。私は日本が大好きで、日本の歴史文化のすべてが、私の好奇心を刺激し続けています。特にキリスト教のカトリックに興味があり、その他にも都会と地方の関係について最近気になっていて、よく考えています。
私のお気に入りの小説はグレアム・グリーンの『権力と栄光』です。プライベートでは友達とサッカーをしたり、最近購入したデジタルカメラで写真を撮ったりしますが、ゆっくりものを書いたり考えたりする時間も大切にしています。

I am English, and I have been living in Japan since 2010 (first in Tokyo, then Nagasaki). I love this country, and I find all aspects of Japanese history and culture to be completely compelling. I have a special interest in Catholicism, as well as in the relationship between the urban and the rural. My favourite novel is Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory. Outside of work I enjoy playing football with friends, taking photos on my digital camera, and having time to think and write.

研究活動

[最近5年間の研究]
現在、日本のカトリック教会史、主に潜伏キリシタン(江戸時代の禁教令下に密かに信仰を続けていたキリシタンの人々)について研究を進めています。2010年に京都、2011年に東京でこの潜伏キリシタンをテーマに研究発表を行いました。

I am currently conducting research into the history of Japanese Catholicism. My main focus at present is on the ‘secret Christians’ of Edo-era Japan, and I have recently given speeches in both Tokyo and Kyoto on this topic. In addition, my current research interests include a) the re-evangelisation of Japan by French missionaries during the mid- to late-nineteenth century, and b) Shusaku Endo’s novel Silence and its implications for post-conciliar Catholic theology.
