On Wednesday, August 29, the Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies International Center held a meeting with host families as part of preparation for the incoming Fall 2012 class of JASIN students.
After reviewing the semester schedule and reporting survey feedback, the International Center staff and host families discussed strategies for successful home stays with JASIN graduate and incoming 1st year student Michelle Nagel, who completed a year-long home stay with two host families earlier this month.
Nagel recommended that host families and students discuss house rules and expectations at the beginning of the home stay, be mindful of cultural differences, and communicate regularly to ensure that both the student and host family enjoy their time together.
Comments from the participating host families included encouraging students to inform their families if they have a change of plans, especially if they will arrive home later than expected, and to discuss their feelings and concerns without reservation.
Starting this semester, the International Center will provide new JASIN home stay students with a reference guide of simple phrases in Japanese to facilitate language practice and effective communication.
Of the 22 JASIN students who will begin their studies next month, 10 students will be staying with host families in Nagasaki city and the surrounding area.
Host family recruitment for the Spring 2013 semester is scheduled to begin in early September.
