4. Getting Home at Night

Last streetcar: 10:50 p.m. #2 from Sumiyoshi and #1 from Hamano-machi
Last weekday bus: 11:00 p.m. Mizokawa (溝川) from Hamano-machi (along river)
Last weekend/holiday bus: 10:20 p.m. Mizokawa (溝川) from Chuoubashi
Last JR train: 11:30 p.m. from Nagasaki Station (to Sumiyoshi, Nagayo)

Last streetcar

There are three final streetcars of which you should be aware. (It is helpful to follow along on your streetcar map while reading this.) At 10:50 p.m., a #2 white streetcar departs from Akasako along a special route that follows the blue line all the way south to Ohato and east to Chinatown before turning north along the green/yellow line to Kokkaido, and finally intersecting with the red line at Suwa Shrine and ending at Hotarujaya. Another #2 car departs Hotarujaya at 10:52 p.m. in the opposite direction but ends several stops before Akasako at the Urakami shako-mae streetcar garage. A third car, also departing at 10:52 p.m., runs a regular #1 blue route starting at Shokakuji-shita and ending in Akasako.

If you are going south (from Sumiyoshi to Nagasaki Station, for example), be sure to catch the #2 white train (bound for Hotarujaya). Other trains will pass through Sumiyoshi between 10:30 and 10:50, but they will be labeled "Urakami-shako mae" and will end their routes at the nearby streetcar garage. Do not worry, even if you see only Urakami cars for 15 or 20 minutes; the last train will depart Akasako at 10:50 and run a full route. (However, if you are late, the only remaining cars between 10:55 and 11:20 are Urakami-bound and will end at the streetcar garage. So don't be later than 10:50!)

If you are going north from Ohato or Hamano-machi and need to go all the way north to Sumiyoshi, take the #1 blue train for Akasako. This train departs Shokakuji-shita (just east of Hamano-machi) at 10:52. A few minutes later, a northbound #2 white train will run through the west end of Hamano-machi, but it will end its route earlier at the streetcar garage.

Last Bus (to Sumiyoshi, Togitsu)

The last weekday bus going north from Hamano-machi is a Mizokawa (溝川) bus that departs the Arcade entrance (large bus stop on the river, across from the Hamano-machi west entrance) at 11:00 p.m. The bus is scheduled to arrive in Sumiyoshi by 11:15 and Togitsu by 11:25, so you can probably make the 11:50 p.m. final curfew in the Ampelos dorm. Keep in mind that the timetable depends on traffic and the number of people boarding, so the bus may arrive later (or earlier!). Be at the Arcade stop by 10:50 or Sumiyoshi stop by 11:05 to be safe.

The last weekend and holiday bus is even earlier: it departs Chuoubashi (next to Daily Yamazaki, across the street and about 30 seconds south of the weekday Arcade stop) at 10:20 p.m. and stops in Sumiyoshi at 10:38 and Togitsu at 10:48.

Last JR Train (to Sumiyoshi, Nagayo)

If you are near Nagasaki Station and need to go north but missed the last streetcar and bus, you have one more chance! For 200 yen, you can take the 11:30 p.m. JR train from Nagasaki Station to Nishi-Urakami, a little-known station on the west end of the Sumiyoshi "Sun Mall" shopping area (next to Joyful Sun and a 1-minute walk from the Sumiyoshi streetcar stop). It is a quick trip--only 7 minutes--and much cheaper than a taxi. The same train also continues to Michino (11:41 p.m.) and Nagayo (11:45 p.m.).

Taxi

Taxis charge a minimum rate of 500 yen, but the typical fare from Nagasaki Station to Sumiyoshi is about 2,000 yen. When possible, try to take a taxi with friends to split the fare. Also, be careful: the back left door opens and closes automatically!
