2. Getting to School - Bus (From Sumiyoshi)
Free School Bus

The university runs free buses to and from Sumiyoshi (住吉) starting at 11:30 a.m. on weekdays when class is in session. The bus begins at Sumiyoshi and runs north, stopping at Rokugizo, Michino, Yokomichi, and Uchizaka before reaching the university. Buses departing the university follow the same route in the opposite direction.

The free bus takes about 10-15 minutes to travel between Sumiyoshi and the university. Here is a full timetable:

As the school bus times are irregular, it is helpful to write this timetable on your class schedule or in your cell phone memo pad.

Tips

* When you get on the bus, greet the driver by saying "Onegai shimasu." Then, thank the driver by saying "Arigatou gozaimashita" when getting off the bus.

* To get a better seat, board the bus at Chitosepia (next to the lottery stand) rather than the Sumiyoshi stop on the main street.

* If you intend to get off the bus before Sumiyoshi (for example, at Seiyu in Michino), please inform the driver when you get on the bus, and try to sit near the front.

City Bus (Sumiyoshi)
Direct Bus (長崎外国語大学)Mizokawa (溝川), or any other Togitsu (時津) bus

On weekday mornings, the easiest bus to catch to school is the direct one with the school name (長崎外国語大学) on the front. The route starts at Cocowalk Mall and goes north, reaching Sumiyoshi at 8:25, 8:35, 10:00, 10:10, and 12:30. These five buses arrive at the university gate on the top of the hill.

On weekends, holidays, or other times throughout the day, it is necessary to catch another bus on the main street, get off at Uchizaka (打坂) or Motomura (元村), and climb up the hill to the university. Of the more than 150 buses that pass between Sumiyoshi and the school in Togitsu each day, about half of these are buses to Mizokawa (溝川), which usually arrive about every 10 minutes. Buses to Mizokawa start their routes in various places and are often a few minutes late, but generally you should not have to wait for more than 10 minutes.

In addition, you can ride any bus that lists Togitsu (時津) on the front or on the route screen by the back door. For example, at 6:55 and 7:45 a.m., you can catch a bus that travels through Togitsu before ending its route at a high school. A few buses, such as those to Ogushi (大串) and Ishihara (石原), do not list Togitsu on their route screens but do, in fact, pass through Togitsu and near the university. For a full list of every city bus that reaches Togitsu, see this timetable.

Saturday School Bus

The university runs two buses on Saturday morning that depart Sumiyoshi at 8:30 and 10:00 and travel to Siebold University before arriving at NUFS 30 minutes later. Wait at the city bus stop on the east (southbound) side of the main street next to the Big Apple pachinko parlor. Two return buses leave NUFS at 4:20 and 5:40 p.m. and reach Sumiyoshi 10 minutes later.
