From 2009, the Department of Modern English was created, and at the same time, the Department of International Communication was reformed, creating two departments in the Faculty of Foreign Languages.
One of the most important trends in the 21st century is that of "Globalism," the loss of national borders in the global economy. The face of IT, science and technology, and even culture and subculture is changing in the same way. This trend has been established by the use of "English as an international language." The Department of Modern English is linked to this trend by providing training in advanced, practical English and preparing students for the various economic and cultural possibilities in this diverse world.
The foremost goal of the Department of English is to develop practical English skills, a frequent request by high school students and those preparing for and taking examinations. Stepwise English proficiency training serves as the foundation of Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies method. This training is conducted with a focus on a career or graduate school in such fields as international business, interpretation, translation, travel, sightseeing, airline, and English teaching. In addition, English skills are further polished with the introduction of study abroad and internship programs, as well as an emphasis on project-type classes and practice outside of the classroom to provide even more real-world experience.
An education in the Department of Modern English provides the tools, tailored for Asia and the Pacific, for success in an ever-changing modern society.
The 21st century has seen the development of another important trend: regionalism and localism in regards to globalism. The Department of International Communication
crosses cultural and political borders that divide people, languages, religions, nations, and societies in the pursuit of peaceful coexistence in this new multicultural world. To prepare students for the future, the Department of International Communication provides instruction in the European cultural sphere through German and French and in the Asian cultural sphere through Chinese and Korean, and in Japanese for overseas students.
Accompanying the creation of this new department is an enrichment of the Korean language instruction opportunities. Also, both departments are emphasizing small class sizes in order to facilitate success in academic studies and post-graduation planning.
Globalism and Multiculturalism are inseparable aspects of 21st century society. Through close cooperation, both departments will aim to develop students' language ability, communication ability, and human ability.
